Newcastle Station Housing

For cities to be desirable, cultural, social and economic diversity must be maintained. This requires the provision of public housing available to those most in need. Newcastle Station Housing is a meditation on public ownership and the issues of economic-driven development. Located within the decommissioned Newcastle Train Station, the design explores the notion of public ownership through communal living, articulated in an overlapping of public and private space. A series of pedestrian streets slice through the stations heritage buildings, reconnecting Hunter street to the Harbour, while providing considerations to public amenity and a framework of subdivisions for future development.
